HOURSAND LOCATION

This wave of transplants brought Creole and Cajun cooking to nearly every corner of the city. It’s fried to order (expect a half-hour wait, plus ten minutes for the white-hot white meat to cool) and it comes with a thick peppery breading. Sauces on the side include a sticky sweet syrup, dark soy, and Hoy Fong Sriarcha. This succulent chicken doesn’t really need sauce, but if you’re so inclined, we recommend mixing all three to form a sweet, salty, spicy glaze. Wendill’s was founded in 1929, back when the San Fernando valley was countryside rather than suburbs. At the time, it touted “the best fried chicken in the West.” In 1984, the nearly forgotten chicken house was bought by Thai restaurateurs, who added a menu of classic Thai dishes.

Stevie's Creole Café

Out of our brave culinary coop comes the humble bird, reimagined — Chef-driven fried chicken fare crafted with whimsical inspiration, fine dining precision and pristine local ingredients. This Downtown Cajun restaurant is run by siblings from Baton Rouge who expertly prepare shrimp and grits, gumbo, red beans, po’ boys, and plenty of fried seafood. When wandering around the Original Farmers Market, follow the distinct scent of garlic, onion, paprika, and cayenne emanating from the 41-year-old restaurant Gumbo Pot. Those aromatics are downright flavorful and regularly found in jambalaya, fried chicken, gator gumbo, and deep-fried frog legs. The restaurant serves all drumsticks, which are trimmed into lollipops before being marinated in salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and fresh culantro.

But an unexpected highlight at Monorom is its fried chicken which is always flavorful and crispy. This decades-old New Orleans-leaning Valley restaurant turns out reliable fried chicken by the piece. Diners can also sort through Bayou staples like gumbo and jambalaya to find fried chicken po’ boys and more. Though Ernst has figured out a way to keep Dinah’s alive, he sees the restaurant’s struggle as part of a wider fight for small businesses affected by urbanization. Over his years watching the neighborhood through the windows at the restaurant, he’s seen small businesses close because of new developments.

Daybird

This growing hot chicken enterprise is one of the most recognizable names in the game at the moment. Thankfully, fans who aren’t here for the heat can still find lots to like in the restaurant’s non-spicy fried chicken, available as combos with tenders, sandwiches, or quarter bird pieces. The best part is that there are a few locations across LA to score some Main Chick fried chicken. There is a lot of great Korean fried chicken in Los Angeles, but Pelicana continues to stand out amongst the options.

The fried chicken here is served simply with generous pieces of meat and a well-seasoned crispy coating. It always comes out hot and fresh and is best enjoyed with some sides like mac and cheese or Cajun fries. Creole and Cajun food is some of the nation’s most coveted and it’s easy to see why. The mere mention of jambalaya, gumbo, fried okra, etouffee, or the gloriously messy seafood boil is a surefire way to bring on an appetite. Los Angeles boasts an abundance of Louisiana flavors due to the Second Great Migration from 1940 to 1970, which saw millions of Black Southerners moving to California. Many came on the Union Pacific rail line and settled in metropolitan cities like Los Angeles and Oakland.

Dinah’s has also made a new commitment to sourcing meat from local farmers, too. All Season Dining All Season Dining will automatically be added to the guest’s season pass after purchase. Guests may present their season pass at any participating dining location to enjoy lunch and dinner each visit in 2024. There is a four-hour interval time between meals, with a maximum of two meals per day. Southern food can be a tricky cuisine to navigate for plant-based diners, but Los Angeles has vegan options covered at Crystals Soul Cafe.

It’s served with packets of honey meant to be slathered all over the chicken and fresh biscuits. But eight months ago, a different situation began to crystallize with the development. Instead of being able to stay open during construction, Dinah’s would have to close in September for three to four years while a new restaurant was built on-site. Ernst’s mind first went to his 60 employees, some of whom have been at the restaurant for upwards of 30 years. The choice to stay and wait it out wasn’t an option for him, especially since there was no guarantee that the new rent wouldn’t price him out of the development entirely.

In 2023, the family-run operation Les Sisters moved into a larger facility bordering Northridge, Chatsworth, and Winnetka. Open since 1986, the restaurant is distinctly New Orleans with heart-shaped beignets and gumbo, as well as a sampler platter with chicken jambalaya, chicken Creole, gumbo, and biscuits. This staple diner-slash-chicken spot has been in the neighborhood for decades, serving up its bright red buckets of takeout fried chicken to the greater Westside. Whether bone-in or boneless chicken, Hoho Chicken is best eaten with a group. A bag full of fried chicken or a rice bowl can be taken up a notch flavorwise with sweet chili, garlic, coconut, lemon pepper, or hot fire options. After taking time to consider his options, Ernst informed his employees of his conversation with the landlord but told them to not worry since it was still a few years down the line.

When it reopens on May 6, Dinah’s Family Restaurant will be renamed Dinah’s Kitchen. The change comes from a desire to expand the restaurant’s offerings and begin to experiment with the menu beyond diner classics. (Ernst hopes to connect with chefs across the country to feature their dishes on the menu.) The new location will also focus on using local ingredients in its dishes. While Dinah’s used canned vegetables and pie fillings, the restaurant will now source fresh produce and work with local farms.

Dinah’s Restaurant opened in 1959 in the same Westchester corner it’s now preparing to vacate. The restaurant was known for its homestyle food like German apple pancakes, Belgian waffles, and, of course, fried chicken. The building that houses the restaurant became a Los Angeles landmark for its futurist Googie architecture and the iconic fried chicken bucket that hovers in its lot. Cambodia Town’s restaurants are plentiful with colorful interiors, with options that never feel redundant.

As of now, future plans have not been solidified for the original Dinah’s location.
