Upon its construction in 1699, the meeting house was the largest structure of any kind in the colonies between Boston and New York, and served as host to the New England Yearly Meeting of Friends until 1905. Marcia Harrow has offered Friendly House over 25 years of continued service as a volunteer and Board Member. We are proud to say that Marcia has now attained the status of Emeritus Board Member.

A Friends meeting house is a meeting house of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), where meeting for worship is usually held. Morgan is a practicing attorney who has devoted her career thus far to public service, and currently serves as a Deputy District Attorney in Los Angeles. Morgan earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Diplomatic History, with a minor in African-American Studies from the University of Pennsylvania. Thereafter she matriculated to and graduated from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. She started by going to the Los Angeles County Jail to visit women incarcerated there. At first she met resistance from the sheriff’s department, but gradually through persistence and demonstrated success, she won the department’s support.

I am honored to be a part of this life changing and life-saving organization. I had heard of the miraculous stories of sustained sobriety from a multitude of Peggy Albrecht Friendly House alumni for over 22 years. However, I began my personal association with Peggy Albrecht Friendly House about 9 years ago after losing both of my brothers to the disease of alcoholism and addiction.

My mission is to preserve Friendly model and expand its reach to make recovery accessible to women of all shapes, ages, and ability. I was very close to the late Executive Director, Peggy Albrecht, the major reason for my affiliation from 2011 to present. This position has chosen me, equipping my soul with a sense of duty to honor the founders and continue the mission. Women in need should have a safe place to go so that they may find a sense of purpose. Friendly House is a special model where women can get their lives back and become a proud member of society. Dr. Patrick lockwood grew up in a small southern missouri town, enculturated with classical southern and midwestern values like honesty, integrity, and the “neighborly” way of relating to people.
To those who visit, the Meeting House is a peaceful reminder of an eventful and historic past. In the eighteenth century, the grounds adjacent to the Friends Meeting House were extensively used. Ezra Stiles’s map of 1758 shows three houses of two stories, one house of 22 stories, and three shops, stables, or other businesses, all on Farewell Street, Marlborough Street, and Tanner Street (present-day Marcus Wheatland Boulevard), surrounding the Friends Meeting House.

I’ve worked in the recovery field since 2007 and have also been the recipient of treatment services. I know how important it is to have access to good care by committed providers. If not for those women who came before me I would not be the woman I am today.

Upon entering this Meeting House for the first time, a visitor unfamiliar with Quaker practices beholds a room with no pulpit; sunbeams rolling in but not through stained-glass windows; no religious icons hanging from the walls; no shrines are to be found at all. Instead, one steps into a great, square room filled with row after row of wooden pews, from all sides facing the center.
One of the key tenets of the Religious Society of Friends is pacifism, adherence to the Peace Testimony. The "Free Quakers" were supporters of the American Revolutionary War, separated from the Society, and built their own meeting house in Philadelphia, at 5th & Arch Streets (1783). With a background in social work, I carry a deep understanding of the unique challenges facing women struggling with addiction.
